Description
Rebuilt in late C19, but the original site and retaining some of the brickwork of the silk mill established in 1717 by John Lombe, the 1st silk mill in this country. Red brick; of 3 and 4 storeys with octagonal tower block having octahedral slate roof. Built on arches on an island in the river. None of the original architectural ornament remains and the fine gates by Bakewell are now in Wardwick (qv). The building converted to an Industrial Museum 1974.
