Full Description
Middle Mill, Old Lane, Darley Abbey. A six bay, five storey eastward addition to the Long Mill c.1796-1800. A stone-surrounded mill race arch survives indicating the position of a former water wheel. Floors and roof rebuilt in mid twentieth century following a fire. (1)
A five-storey, six-bay eastwards extension of Long Mill, known as Middle Mill, is thought to have been built during the period 1796-1801. It housed additional water wheels powered by a newly cut leat that took water from higher up the river. It was re-floored and re-roofed following a serious fire in the 1940s. Further improvements were made in 1923, when the water-wheels were entirely replaced by turbines which drove D.C. electricity generators. (2)
The mill closed in the late 1960s but still flourishes after a fashion, split up into smaller industrial units. (3)
Middle Mill. Five-storey, 6 bay, brick extension of Long Mill, built 1804-5 over the original leat The stone oversailing arch for the leat survives on the south side. Extensive fire damage in 1947 means that little of the internal structure survives. The sash windows are largely complete and in working order. (4)
