Full Description

West Mill, Old Lane, Darley Abbey. A westward extension from the original Long Mill, of four storeys and seven bays, with western end turning southward for an extension of a further seven bays, making an L-shaped building. Of similar fire-resistant construction to East Mill and probably built in c.1819-21 immediately after the former. (1) West Mill has an L-plan on four storeys and an attic. It was built as a westwards extension of Long Mill at about the same time as the East Mill was constructed, and was associated with the cutting of a new leat passing along the western side of Long Mill and powering further wheels in West Mill. Further improvements were made in 1923, when the water-wheels were entirely replaced by turbines which drove D.C. electricity generators. (2) The mill closed in the late 1960s but still flourishes after a fashion, split up into smaller industrial units. (3) West Mill, Ellison's Metal Products. 1821 four storey brick building with stone coped gable and parapets. Graduated slate roofs with sandstone hips and ridges. Brick stack to south gable part of stove vent flue system. The building was constructed in two or thee phases. Sash windows with one and a half bays of blind windows to south elevation. (4)
