Full Description

This house has a splendid central cruck truss belonging to an earlier house of at least two rooms, and with lower eaves than at present. This was a good quality house built about 1500, with the hall where the current western room is, and the service end in the position of the eastern cottage, probably built as two rooms. The only hearth was in the hall, and it had a timber firehood which was replaced when the upper storey was built. The chimney in the eastern cottage is later, about 1650-1700. The front wall was rebuilt in brick probably in two stages, with the eastern end first. (1) The western wing (cottage named Cobwebs in 1998) is the solar crosswing to the hall in the eastern wing (Dripping Pan Cottage in 1998), and contained two rooms on each floor. The house dates from the 15th century. The entrance porch was added in the 17th century when the first inglenook was built, suggesting that the house was divided at this time. The outer walls have been replaced or clad in brick, but there were no major alterations until the 20th century. In 1999 the render was removed from the outer walls which revealed a number of features including, in the light orange brick above the tie beam, a centrally placed plaque of a material similar to Coade stone, with the initials "R T", and below the tie beam, in burnt brick, "R T " and "17--", the rest of the numerals missing because a door has been inserted .
