Full Description
War memorial tower, support platform and railings, listed Grade II. Completed 1923, with additions c.1934. Designed by Lieut.-Colonel A W Brewill to commemorate the fallen members of The Sherwood Foresters (Nottingham and Derbyshire Regiment). Built by Joseph Payne, builder, of Crich. The tower is the latest in a series of structures erected on, or close to this prominent site. A limestone tower was erected in 1788 by Francis Hurt; the date stone from that structure, which was taken down in 1849, is incorporated into the present structure. The 1788 tower was replaced by another circular tower in 1851. This was later affected by subsidence and was struck by lightening, and was demolished in 1922. In 1934, the tower was fitted with a 28" searchlight, with a luminous range of 38 miles. See list description for more details. (1)
Crich Stand's official name is the Regimental Memorial of the Sherwood Foresters. The tower was originally dedicated to members of the Sherwood Foresters who were killed during the First World War. Since then, plaques havae been added to commemorate the fallen in the Second World War and subsequent conflicts. The tower is 286 metres above sea level and the dome that sits on top weighs 40 tonnes. It cost about £4000 to build. Questions about the stability of Crich Stand were raised in 2006 following two landslips at a nearby quarry. However the quarry owners stated there was no risk to the monument. (2)
