Full Description

An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Archaeological Research Services Ltd in 2007 during drainage works in the churchyard. Four articulated burials were uncovered during the watching brief, none of which were marked by a headstone, which suggests that the burials either date to an earlier church, or their headstones have been moved more recently. A number of headstones that were leant against the church may have originally belonged to these burials. A substantial sandstone wall was also uncovered during the watching brief. It is thought that this was originally an exterior wall of an earlier church that stood at this site prior to the current church being built (see SMR 5330). Plans of this earlier church do not correspond with the position of the wall that was uncovered, and although it is quite possible that the plans are inaccurate, it may be that the wall relates to a previously unrecorded structure.
