Full Description
The present church at Edale was erected in 1886, and replaces an earlier chapel on a site across the road (see SMR 5017). The new church was built at a cost of £3,000 that was raised by public subscription. It is a handsome edifice, in the Decorated Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south west porch, and tower surmounted by a fine spire. There is accommodation for 250. (1)
This church was built in 1885-6, with the tower completed in 1890, by William Dawes of Manchester. It is built of coursed squared rock-faced gritstone with gritstone ashlar dressings. It has plain tile roofs with stone coped gables. It comprises a nave with south porch, chancel, south vestry and north east tower with short stone broach spire. It has been built in Early English style, with pairs and triplets of lancets to the nave and cusped lancets to the chancel. The tower is of three stages with diagonal buttresses, the north east buttress incorporating a polygonal stair turret. It has paired lancet bell-openings. The spire has one tier of lucarnes with cross finials. The base of the north east buttress is inscribed with the date 1885. There is a bellcote on the eastern gable of the nave, and a paired chimney stack rising from the eaves at the south east corner of the nave. The church has a plain interior with substantial timber roofs. There is stained glass in the north eastern-most window of the nave, which was created in 1905 by Sir Ninian Comper. Above the south door, inside, are two benefaction boards dated 1831, from the old church (see SMR 5017). (2)
