Full Description

Hasland Hall (school), Mansfield Road, is of c. 1800, ashlar, with sash windows and a semi-circular Doric porch, very similar to Holywell House, Chesterfield. (1) Map evidence indicates that Hasland Hall became a school sometime in the early 20th century, as it is shown as a house on the 3rd edition Ordnance Survey map of c. 1912-1921 but as Hasland Hall School on the 4th edition of the late 1930s. (2, 3) Hasland Hall and its surrounding gardens and parkland was sold to the Mayor, Alderman and Burgesses of the Borough of Chesterfield in 1931. The building was converted for use as a Secondary Modern School, which opened with 280 scholars in January 1932. (4) Hasland Hall School was built c. 1800 of ashlar with band between storeys. It has a cornice and blocking course and a hipped slate roof. It is 2 storeys high with 5 windows to a floor, there are sash windows to the 1st floor with glazing bars, those on the ground floor are unbarred. There is a central semi-circular Doric columned porch with panelled frieze, cornice with mitules and a blocking course. It has a round arched door with an ornamental fanlight and a 6 panelled door with enriched panels, side lights and steps. The central 1st floor window has an ornamental surround and a cornice on brackets. The plain side facades are in a similar style. The interior has had some alterations, including a modern staircase but retains elliptical arches over the staircase and over the hall, the latter with moulded pilasters and reeded panelled reveals. The hall and 2 ground floor rooms have moulded plaster ceilings and there is an oval dome over the staircase. There is a fireplace with the Lucas arms. (5)
