Full Description

Archaeological survey of woodland in north-east Derbyshire has identified a number of industrial features in Ducksick Wood, Linacre. Four deposits of bloomery iron slag were recorded, located in a line north-south in the centre of the wood. A cluster of shallow pits in the east of the wood may be ironstone mining; nodules of ore can be seen in the streamside close by. Extraction of ironstone is mentioned in documents in the Portland Archives. There are a number of pits in the wood: some, possibly eleven, are Q-pits, seventeen others may be ironstone or coal extraction pits, while some are unexplained. There is one platform on which a fragment of charcoal was found; this has been recorded as a charcoal platform or hearth, but this identification is somewhat tentative. Early maps show a track over a culverted stream leading to the feature, so it could be the base of a structure. The lack of evidence for charcoal production sites is surprising, given the obvious evidence of iron smelting. (1)
