Full Description

Cemetery church and chapel built in 1857 from coursed stone with ashlar dressings. It has a fishscale and plain tiled roof with coped gable ends. Built in a decorated style, it has two gables , the northern being to larger, with a short stone obelisk-like spire. (1) According to Kelly's Directory, a cemetery of 8 acres, with two mortuary chapels, was opened at Spital in 1857, at a cost of £6,000. (2) There are two chapels situated in Spital Cemetery on the 1st edition 25" Ordnance Survey map of c. 1880. The northern most chapel was a Dissenter's chapel, the other was an Episcopal chapel. (3)
