Full Description

Formerly a Baptist Church built in the late 19th century from red brick with stone dressings and slate roof. Tall 3 bay facade with convex centre bay with cornice and pediment above. The flanking side wings have a cornice and blocking course. Paired stone corbels and moulded eaves cornice overall. The centre window is recessed with an arched top and moulded arch and corbelled stone impost band. The flanking bays each have a blind panel with single storey entrance porches at base. Each porch has a round arched door with plain fanlight on inner face and 1 round arched window with keystone and impost blocks. Brick pilasters, stone eaves cornice and blocking course. Side facade prominent above Infirmary Road has 3 tall windows each set in a recessed panel. 5 windows below this and rear end outshut. The building has an unusual ventilation system via 19th century cast iron grilles set in the outside base of the pilasters. (1) According to Bulmer's Directory, the Baptists have a chapel in Brewery Street - a plain brick building with school on the ground floor. There is accommodation for 370. (2) According to Kelly's Directory, the Baptist chapel, in Brewery street, built in 1861, affords 350 sittings. (3)
