Building record MDR14180 - Nos. 64-67 Long Row, Belper

A grade II listed terrace dating to the 18th-early 19th century. The terrace is comprised of coursed stone houses with slate roofs, which are stepped down the hillside individually. They are of two storeys. No 64 has one window; sashes with late 19th century glazing. No 65 has two ground floor windows, one above; modern glazing in original sash spaces. No 66 has three ground floor windows; sashes with late 19th century glazing (now includes part of what was originally No 67). The rest of No 67 has one similar window ground floor, and a small modern light above. About 3 ft high, coursed stone garden walls with pitched stone coping adjoin each house. (1) Long Row contains perhaps the most impressive example of industrial housing built in the town by Jedediah Strutt [also see SMR 28783-28790]. (2) Long Row is industrial housing of a high quality. There were originally 77 houses in the Long Row. It was built in the form of three terraces, two of which were continuous until broken by the North Midland Railway in 1840. The southern two-storey terrace is constructed primarily in brick and ascends the rising groud in stepped pairs [although these end four houses are a bit of an anomaly, being built in stone and ascending in individual steps]. Each house has its own garden with allotments behind. There are now 62 dwellings in all. (3)
