Building record MDR14182 - Nos. 71-77 Long Row, Belper

A grade II listed terrace of early industrial housing of some quality, built by William Strutt in 1794-7 to house workers in the new mills and warehouses then being erected at Belper. The terrace is comprised of stone houses built on a hill slope with a pitched slate roof overall. It is of three storeys. The houses have one window each (and some additional small first floor windows). The windows have stone lintels, and sashes with late 19th century glazing. There are small paired sashes to the top floor. The doors have voussoirs and cambered head linings. There is a stone baulk attached to the corner of the wall at No 71. (1) Long Row contains perhaps the most impressive example of industrial housing built in the town by Jedediah Strutt [also see SMR 28783-28790]. (2) Long Row is industrial housing of a high quality. There were originally 77 houses in the Long Row. It was built in the form of three terraces, two of which were continuous until broken by the North Midland Railway in 1840. There are now 62 dwellings in all. (3)
