Full Description
World War I practice trenches were identified on Burbage Edge from a LiDAR survey that was commissioned by the Coal Authority in 2014. The LiDAR survey was carried out over the disused mine workings at Goyt's Moss, west of Buxton. Whilst examining the data in an effort to help the Coal Authority pick out old mining structures etc, English Heritage observed a number of other features that had the tell-tale crenelated form associated with WWI practice trenches. There is also evidence for at least some the earthworks appearing on Google Earth imagery, though not to the same extent as can be seen on the LiDAR survey. There are two separate blocks of features, although there may in fact be more and the whole may be a larger complex. The most obvious features are centred at c. SK 034 726, with the main entrenchments at SK 0348 7259 and SK 0338 7261, but the whole complex in this area stretches c. 100 N-S and 200 E-W. Further west there is a nice set of crenelated trenches at SK 0303 7255 and a possible building (though this could be later and unrelated) at SK 0324 7234. There are further less clear trenches at SK 0324 7241, together with several amorphous features to the north. (1)
