Full Description
Grade II listed western range to the east courtyard of Babington Hospital [SMR17059], originally designed as a workhouse for the Belper Union by architect Giles Scott, in the Jacobean style and built of ashlar with quoins and a slate roof. The three-storeyed centre has gabled dormers which break through the eaves and a central lantern. There are three-storeyed canted bays either side of a Tudor arched doorway which has small flanking windows. Windows have latticed iron glazing except for the main windows of the lower two storeys. The rear elevation has a centre gable. Outer wings are of two storeys and have three gabled dormers which break through the eaves, with five windows to each story below. There is some modern glazing. Thought to be circa 1838 but not on the Belper Tithe Map of 1844, so possibly circa 1845-50? (1)
