Full Description

A Grade II listed hotel, apparently built at three different periods during the 18th and 19th century, it has an 1867 date stone over the door. The L-shaped building stands at the junction of three roads, facing the main road river crossing. Built of coursed stone, it has a steeply pitched tiled roof and coped gable ends with kneelers. The western part is the oldest, and has a rear wing with an external stone staircase. The street façade is of three storeys with irregularly placed windows and a door with massive painted quoins and lintel. The eastern wing is at right angles, and has two storeys and an attic (but of the same height as the western section). The unbarred sash-windows have painted surrounds and segmental arches. There is a modern glazed porch in the angle. The end façade to the street has two ground floor windows and a small attic casement. Used as a baiting place for coal higglers before the railway era.
