Full Description
A Grade II* listed building, said to have been originally a shepherds cottage of late 16th century date, but the earliest visible part of the existing cottage (forming the rear northern wing of the present farmhouse) is of 17th century date. The main eastern facade is of coursed stone with an old slate roof and off centre chimney stack. The two storeys have two two-light unbarred sash-windows, and an off centre six-panelled door with the top 2 panels now glazed. The building extends into the south part of the adjoining entrance range and there are two ground floor windows in this part. The rear extends into a 19th century red brick two-storey range, said to have been a former 'stocking factory'. This has three iron casement windows at the 1st floor level, with centre opening lights. The ground floor has an outshut in front with two similar windows. The interior, oldest part of the house has exposed ceiling beams and a stone fireplace. The former 1st floor end mullioned window is now replaced by a door. The 19th century part has remnants of metal brackets possibly associated with stocking frames. The kitchen here has a baking oven with separate chimney, and an iron framed ceiling of stone slabs. (1)
