Building record MDR16197 - The George Inn, Bridge Street, Belper

A Grade II listed Inn, formerly 'The George and Dragon' and the main Belper coaching inn. The earliest part of the facade to the south is a building of the late 17th or early 18th century with the end to the street. The inn is built of coursed stone rubble with a modern pantile roof, coved eaves cornice and quoins. The southern facade of is of three storeys, each with three windows with stone mullions and the ground floor windows altered. The northern part of the building seems to have been added in the 18th century to this earlier southern building and the west windows of the latter remodelled during the same period and probably at the same time. The eastern or street facade is of three storeys with four sash windows to the top floor; two to the first floor with stone surrounds; two windows and a former 19th century shop window to the ground floor as well as a Doric columned porch, the frieze carved with masks, with cornice and blocking course. There is a painted swinging sign on a wrought iron bracket. (1)
