Full Description

A Grade II listed school built in 1908 by architects Hunter and Woodhouse of Belper. The patron was G H Strutt. Essentially a symmetrical composition, the school stands in an embanked garden above the road. Built with stone from Strutt quarry in Makeney, rusticated with Matlock stone dressings and a Westmoreland green slated roof. Built in the Jacobean style, the school has a centre block of two storeys with a centre fleche spire. It has coped gable ends with chimneys and five long windows with paired arched lights, the centre three under gables. With flanking single storey gabled blocks, the southern one has a rear tower. Each of these is linked by an arcade to outer, two storey, wings. The windows have mullions, transoms and leaded glazing. The building is designed to harmonize with G Scott's workhouse (now Babington Hospital [SMR17059]) opposite. (1)
