Full Description
A Grade II Listed 1840 stone railway tunnel portal. Part of North Midland Railway surveyed by George Stephenson. There is some evidence that the tunnel portals were designed by Francis Thompson. The portal has concentric stone semi-circular arches in a decreasing series as at the northern entrance [see SMR 28836]. This was the longest railway tunnel in the country when it was built.
