Full Description

One or two "ancient" heaps of iron slag were reported near the "brook which is in Hulland Ward". Elizabethan commissioners reported in 1581 that "nere unto the broke which is in Holland ward we do see one or two great and auncient heapes of iron slagg or cinders whereby it would seem there hathe ben some water worke there for melting of iron stone". A forge that took £10 0s 12d in Hulland Ward is mentioned in 1257. Lander and Vellacott write that "it [was] not improbable that iron was largely worked, even during the 12th century, in Derbyshire...no absolute proof is owing to the complete absence of local accounts for that period."
