Full Description

A probable round cairn north-east of Griffe Walk Farm. (1,2) Barrow at SK 2444 5620, surveyed at 1:2500. It has the apperance of a ploughed down bowl barrow and is visible now as a pronounced but spread swelling 0.6m in height. There is no trace of a ditch. (3) This mound has been ploughed over and is 0.2m high upslope to the west and 0.7m downslope to the east. Its edge is poorly defined to the west. There is no disturbance of profile, but a patch of nettles near the centre may suggest robbing. The original diameter is hard to estimate, but may have been c. 11-12m. It may be the barrow that was excavated by Rooke in 1788 [see SMR 8320] or by Bateman in 1844 [see SMR 2465], although Bateman's description of the site of his excavation cannot easily be reconciled with this one.
