Full Description

An Anglo-Saxon bronze brooch, probably of Irish make, was found in 1862 near the village of Bonsall. It had originally been set with amber or paste and would have been richly gilt and enamelled. The interlaced ornaments are elaborately formed and are of great variety. The head of the pin is large and beautifully ornamented. The way in which the ring has worn where the pin pressed against it when clasped indicates that it was worn across the brreast or shoulder. Faint traces of Oghams characters still remain. (1) An isolated find of a gilt-bronze brooch was made at Bonsall. It is an 8th century piece, of Irish manufacture. It was probably acquired by trade and cultural contact with the Celtic centre in which it was manufactured. (3). Now in the British Museum. (4)
