Monument record MDR3072 - Alleged 'Celtic' Field System, Cromford Moor, Cromford

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • World Heritage Site Buffer Zone

Full Description

A fine series of "Celtic fields" and lynchets in the Cromford area (c. SK 29 55) was seen in 1956 from Black Rock. (1) SK 298 558. There are signs of disturbance on Cromford Moor, probably of modern origin. (2) Lynchet type markings on aerial photographs at SK 296 556 are not identifiable on the ground. Extensive foundations and ruins of old field walls (some published on 25") are visible on Cromford Moor in the indicated area, they appear to date from the enclosure. However the moor is not visible from Black Rock and it cannot be to this that Posnansky refers. Inspection of aerial photographs and visual field viewing from Black Rock revealed no prominent prehistoric agriculture in the area of Cromford. (3)
