Full Description

A socketed bronze axe from Kirk Ireton is in the Clifton Park Museum, Rotherham. It appears to be the implement from this locality illustrated by Llewellynn Jewitt in his 'Half-hours amongst some English antiquities (2nd ed., 1880, fig. 97), but the absence of a scale prevents direct comparison. The axe at Rotherham is complete and has a sharp cutting edge. The socket is oval and on each face are three vertical ribs hanging down from the collar. (1)
