Place record MDR3362 - Lutudarum - Roman leadmining centre

Type and Period (1)

Full Description

The Roman name 'LUTUDARUM' is known on the evidence of inscriptions on lead ingots and also recorded in the Ravenna Cosmography. The name clearly belongs to the lead-mining district of Derbyshire, but the precise location of the administrative centre is still unknown. A site near Wirksworth (SK 2854) seem to be indicated (a); the fort recently discovered at Chesterfield is too far to the north-east. (1) Coates reviewing Rivet's 'Place Names of Britain' suggested that 'LUTUDARUM' may be analogous with Youlgreave (SK 2064), 5miles north west of Wirksworth. (2)
