Monument record MDR4087 - Possible barrow (site of), Bleaklow, Great Longstone

Type and Period (2)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

Round barrow excavated by T Bateman in 1848. It had been disturbed before this date and scattered bones, beaker sherds and a flint scraper were recovered. (1,2). Suggested by the OS as being a natural outcrop. (4) Two different grid references. Have been given previously for this site (SK 2187 7387 and SK 2188 7338), one a spurious transcription of the seventh number. There is nothing at either location. That to the north is within a narrow dry valley and seems an unlikely barrow site. That to the south has only low natural knolls nearby. The excavation by Bateman previously ascribed to this, is probably the result of trying to fit the various Bateman excavations to extant remains and so is in error. The excavation in question probably took place at SMR 6463. (6). As location of barrow is unknown the point has been removed from the map. (7).
