Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

The depopulation of Woodcote may be provisionally dated to between 1446 and 1468. Nothing is left except eight fields not far from Smisby, still called Woodcote Closes, covering about 53 acres, in some of which the village probably stood, and Woodcock-lane on one side of them, leading from the town of Ashby. (1, 2) The site is given the grid reference of SK 354187 in the Deserted Medieval Village Research Group's 5th Annual Report of 1957. (3) This grid reference lies in Leicestershire. The indicated area is almost completely arable; nothing of interest was seen. (4) The area around SK 353186 (approximately) is one of archaeological interest as it is believed to contain the lost village of Woodcote. In 1988 it was described as arable and grazing land. (5)
