Full Description

Part of Cursus: running ENE - WSW, the two ditches are c.80m apart, and there is a third meandering ditch which appear to run within the area defined by the other two. The cursus continues to the east of Frizam's Lane (SMR 27401) as part of the Scheduled Area (SAM 251), and to the west (SMR 19912 & 19913). Known from APs. (2,3) In 1969 a narrow trench was excavated across the cursus just west of Frizam's Lane. This was largely uninformative. However, subsequent fieldwork (4, 5), including fieldwalking, magnetometry, resistivity and excavation, has provided a wealth of information confirming the cursus as a Later Neolithic monument. Fragments of Peterborough Ware were found 15cm above the bottom of the northern ditch whilst the upper fill contained Iron Age Scored Ware. A pit 17m north of the northern cursus ditch was found to contain fire cracked pebbles and a rim sherd of an EBA collared urn. (6)
