Full Description

"In the Hilary term of 35 Edward I [1308] a case ... (a) came before the court of King's Bench with reference to the digging of coal at Denby" ... in the ground of William Rosel called "Anisgrivels". This together with "an entry relating to the year 1291, on a roll of Pleas (b) of the Crown", which mentions dragging coals at Denby, suggests that the mining industry here was well established. Coal mines at Denby are mentioned in a letter (c)(d) written by Thomas Houghton in 1693. (1) Denby Colliery appears on a map of "Midland Collieries about 1610." (2) The site of these Md. coal mines was not identified in field investigation. (3)
