Full Description

The Boathouse was built by Robert Adam circa 1760-70 and consists of a basement with three round headed arches; the outer arches have ornamental friezes and pediments over them, with the centre arch having a one storey pedimented structure. The outer arches open out into wet boat houses, whereas the centre one is filled and has a small cascade. The interior consists of a plain vestibule with stone stairs down to left and right, and a door in the centre giving access to an elaborately decorated Adam tea room. The basement floor has three vaulted chambers, the outer ones both wet boat houses, and the centre a closed room with a semi-circular cold plunge bath, with water flowing in a cill across the floor and cascading through a small opening into the lake. In a recess is a 18th century water closet with flowing water. (1) The Boathouse is Grade I listed building that was designed by Robert Adam and built between 1770-71 by James Denston. The building is constructed from red brick throughout with ashlar facing on the exterior and plaster and ashlar on the interior. There is a central two-storey structure with a bath room surmounted by a tackle/fishing room. The central structure is flanked by single-storey boathouses on either side. (2) A geophysical survey and trial trenching was undertaken to the immediate southwest of this boathouse by Allen Archaeology Limited in 2009. Evidence for the apsidal ends of the two single-storey boathouses was encountered, along with a 20th century gravel surface and earthworks associated with the creation of Island Lake Pond. (3)
