Full Description

At Wingerworth, coal mining was being carried on before 1300. In 1675, a coal pit of Sir F. Humblock, 45 ft. deep, was fired four times within a month or five weeks because of fire damp. (1) A map of Midland Collieries about 1610 shows one at Wingerworth. [The scale of the map is too small to plot on O.S.6".] (2) The site of this 17th c. coal-mining was not identified in field investigation. There are a great number of disused mines in the area. (3) No further information. (4)
