Full Description

[Marginal] Ne. polished stone celt (acc. no. 361-1-31), and fragments of another celt (acc. no. 316-2-31) from Ashover, now in Derby Museum. (1) The present location of both these finds is as stated in authority 1. The former is thus described in the Museum Acc. Records. "6" long, 2 1/2" wide. Found on a stone wall at ASHOVER in 1923 by the son of the donor Mr. E. CHAMBER. Petrological examination: "A polished axe of epidotized quartz - felspar tuff. Possibly from the Lake District". The latter is thus described. "Fragment of a polished stone axe, cutting edge 2 1/4" wide and 1 1/2" long. Petrological examination: "Group IV Craig Lwyd." (2) The original find spots could not be determined. (3) No further information. (4) SK 3463. The axes have been subjected to thin-section analysis. The former (acc. no. 316-1-31) has been assigned to Group XX, the possible source area of which is Charnwood Forest. The other fragment (acc. no. 316-2-31) is assigned to Group VII (Graig LLwyd).
