Full Description

SK 3656. Moorwood Moor, South Wingfield. Referred to in the early 13th century as 'bosco de Morwde ubi quondam heremite solebant habitare'. Possibly the same hermit as is referred to in the place-name Elmit Land (in Ashover), possibly from 'le Hermite Ker', documented in 1319, meaning 'hermit's marsh'. (1) In a charter dated between 1204 and 1235, the Abbot and Convent of Dale granted Richard Venator (Hunter) the "landa in bosco de Morwde, ubi quondam heremite solebant habitare" (the 'landa' in Moorwood where formerly hermits used to dwell). There is also a reference to lands in Ashover called in 1319 'le Hermite Ker', the Hermit Marsh. (2) At Morewood, in Ashover, was a hermitage, before 1235. Patron noted as Dale Abbey. (3) The Postal Authorities at Ashover identified Morewood (or Moorwood) as falling between Ashover and Brackenfield (SK 3659). (4) No further information was gained in field investigation. (5) Perhaps the hermitage is more likely to refer to Moorwood Moor in South Wingfield parish than Ashover. (6)
