Full Description

SK 3831 7104 Low Pavement, Bodens Restaurant (Falcon Inn). Timber-framed building at the east end of Low Pavement, with each storey jettied out and supported over the pavement by two large stone Tuscan columns. These are Late Elizabethan and more characteristic of Devon, e.g. Totnes, than of Derbyshire. (1) A grade II listed building that has a late Elizabethan plastered facade to a timber-framed house. It is of three storeys with a gabled attic, and to each floor it is jettied out. The first floor is supported on Doric pillars, forming an arcade along the pavement beneath, with panelled a wooden ceiling. The building has two windows within 19th century canted oriel bays with unbarred sashes. The upper floors have a central original pilaster on the facade. There are ornamental 19th century barge boards to the gables. The shop front has panelled pilasters and a centre door. The windows have moulded frames, with a centre vertical glazing bar remaining to each. There is a tiled interior. The first floor rooms have a moulded plaster cornice. The rear range of buildings is in Falcon Yard. The northern part is early 18th century red brick; the ground floor having been painted. There are brick string courses at second floor sill and (remnants) at first floor sill. The southern coped gable end has a bricked up attic window; otherwise it is of three storeys. There are five windows irregularly placed; they are sashes, and the top floor ones have boxed frames and glazing bars. The door has a plain fanlight. No 13 was formerly the Falcon Inn said to have been one of Chesterfield's coaching Inns. This building was formerly listed as Boden's Fish Buffet. (2)
