Full Description

(SK 4639) Crop/soil marks north east of Sourbrook (Sowbrook) Farm (SK 45943947) are alleged by Shakespeare to represent a series of 23 "rings" and other markings, which were considered by Shakespeare to be Saxon occupation of uniform plan (see illus. 1). The sites (which cannot be precisely located from the topographical description given) varied from 5ft. to 20ft. in diameter, but most were 7ft. to 14ft. in diameter. One consisted of straight lines with sides of, respectively, 8ft., 14ft., 12 1/2 ft., and 6ft. in length. Another "line" site was 4ft. by 5ft. in diameter. Near the entrance to this close, north east of Sourbrook Farm, were two "ring" sites 'of imperfect shape', one of which was roughly horseshoe shaped (see illus. 2). (These sites are of doubtful antiquity, and could signify "fairy rings". There are no OS APs available for this area). (1)
