Full Description

"Sawley Wharf. Polished stone axe. Derby Museum, 866-22". (Neolithic - EBA). (1) A neolithic polished stone axe found in 1916 "in River Trent near Sawley while dredging" is now in Derby Museum. (2) Unclassified polished stone axe found in the bed of the Trent at Sawley Wharf while dredging for gravel for a W.D.Camp. Given by Alfred Brockley, Potter Street, Melbourne. Acc No 886-22 [given wrongly by Auth 1]. Measurements 5 3/4" x 3 1/2" x 1 1/5"; weight 1 lb 11 ozs. Petrology: Altered gabbro Pyroxene in well formed crystals is altered on its margins to a pale amphibale and occasionally to pale green chlorite. The felspar is completely altered down to fine sericite (F.W.S) (3) 'Sawley Wharf' was not identified - it is not known locally. The axe is exhibited in Derby Museum. (4)
