Full Description

SK 4966 Houghton Felley. Houghton Felley was formerly in the possession of Felley Priory, Notts, in the late 12th century, the lands being for the payment of daily mass. (1) In 1493 Lord Grey sold to the Vavasor family the manors of Langwith Basset, Houghton Filley and Houghton Basset which lay partly in the parish of Langwith and partly in Pleasley. The Vavasors did not hold them long, and sold them to the Hardwick family before the accession of Elizabeth I in 1558. Elizabeth of Hardwick took them in marriage to Sir William Cavendish. (2) Mentioned in documents of 1587, 1592 and 1608; reminiscent of the possessions of Felley Priory in the area. (3) Not shown on Burdett's map of Derbyshire or Sanderson's map of Twenty Miles round Mansfield. Buildings to the south of Stony Houghton are named Felley Houghton on 1st ed. OS 25", and the name is attached to buildings to the west on modern maps. This record remains 'unlocated' due to the uncertainty as to location of the original lands. (4)
