Monument record MDR6043 - Morton, Medieval park

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

A park at Morton mentioned in 1330. (1-2) Centred SK 4162. It seems very probable that the course shown on Rec. 6" represents the perimeter of this park. It follows significantly continuous field and parish boundaries, enclosing Park Hall (SK 46 SW 3) where foundations etc. have been found. "Hallgate" (SK 415626), "Moorgate" (SK 420610), "Parkhouse Farm" (SK 412636), and the kink in Evershill Lane at SK 405607 help to define the perimeter. (3) The indicated perimeter encloses, in the main, prosperous farm land. Substantial fences are evident but nothing was found that could be associated with a medieval pale. (4)
