Full Description

SK 534783 Whitwell Wood, Bank and Ditch. A number of earthen bank and ditch boundaries occur within Whitwell Wood. A major one runs NW-SE from SK 52577892 to SK 52637845 where there is a major break. The barrier commences again at SK 52727834 and runs to SK 52937795 with a bulldozed ride at about its midpoint. The bank is roughly 2.5m (8ft) wide and 0.6m (2ft) high, the ditch is some 2m (6ft) wide. This feature preseumably was a pale at one time and represents a step in the development of the wood. A Medieval date is suggested. (1-2) Associated with SMR sites 15178, 15179, 15180.
