Full Description

Toll road, established by ii George III c76 1771, from Grindleford to Penistone. Construction started in c. 1775. The main trustee was Hans Winthrop Mortimer (d.1807). Other trustees included Lord Melbourne and the Cavendish family. An Act of 1792 (33 Geo III ch 184) renewed the turnpike but it was not renewed in 1813 following its financial collapse. Failed Turnpike. (1) The construction work was completed by the Fairbank family. (2)
