Full Description
Toll road, establishced by Geo III, c 76 (1771), from Grindleford to Penistone. Construction started c. 1775. The main trustee was Hans Winthrop Mortimer (d. 1807). Other trustees included Lord Melbourne and the Cavendish family. The Act of 1792 (33 Geo III ch. 184) renewed the turnpike, but was not renewed in 1813 following its financial collapse.
Construction work was completed by the Fairbank family. To the south of the viaduct over Ladybower Brook, the turnpike is overlain by the A6013. (1-3)
