Full Description

Toll road, established by II Geo III c76 1771, from Grindleford to Penistone. Construction started in ca 1775. The main trustee was W. Mortimer (d. 1807). Other Trustees included Lord Melbourne and the Cavendish family. Act 33 Geo III Ch 184 (1792) but was not renewed in 1813. Failed turnpike (1) Work on construction completed by the Fairbank family (2)
