Full Description

Cop Rake lead mining remains. A long vein, cast fairly deeply. The waste heaps along this rake has been cleared back are a greatly reduced in height. There has also been fluorspar extraction in the 1960s which has also reduced the hillocks. Working at Cop Rake had ceased by 1880 as the Ordnance Survey map records this area as old lead mining. (1) Post medieval lead mining complex of Cop Rake and Moss Rake, defined into three areas of protection. Cop Rake has been worked since at least the 13th century. Visible remains include opencuts, hillocks, mining shafts, an engine shaft and a gin circle. Centred at national grid reference SK13208003 is a concentrated area of activity where surface remains include a number of small climbing shafts, a bridge, sections of walling, an engine shaft and a gin circle. At grid reference SK13757997, is another area of remains of waste hillocks and two shafts, now covered. A small section in the centre of the protected area has been subjected to recent fluorspar exploration. In the third area of protection centred at national grid reference SK13907980 are the lead mining remains of Moss Rake [SMR 14138]. (2) Cop Rake and Starvehouse Mine. At Cop Rake there are fine examples of opencuts with associated shafts and unusual drystone walling across the cut, with early reworked hillocks, a retained causeway across the vein, a possible water storage or ore-dressing pond, a possible gin circle and ruined coes. The mines are documented as active as early as the 13th century. (3)
