Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

A coin of Louis the Pious was found in May 1985 near Repton (findspot recorded confidentially - not available to SMR). It was of the Temple type, 822-840, from an unspecified Frankish mint. This was the coinage that was current on the Continent during the Viking raids of the mid-9th century and which members of the Great Army might have brought over with them in 865. However few coins of this period have been found in England, either in hoards or as single finds (1)
